Nabokov re-signed by Sharks after threatening to join Dynamo
Around the league
Last night San Jose Sharks finally re-signed Evgeny Nabokov to a two-year, $7.15 - million US contract. Ironically enough Nabokov's dossier got settled after his clan announced that if unsigned until the 1st of November, Evgeny will join RSL's Moscow Dynamo. According to Nabokov he didn't want to find himself in situations similar to (Mike) Peca's or (Nikolai) Khabibulin's, missing a full season to contract negotiations. John, as they call him in California, wanted to play and RSL seemed to be a perfect place for it.
There's an obvious fact that Nabokov may just have been using Dynamo option to advance contract talks. Surely Sharks poor start in regular season (1-4-0) toppled by NHL's worst 22 goals against helped Nabokov's case as well.
Another Shark Alex Korolyuk flew back to Kazan early this week and it appears he's going to stay there for the rest of the season. Korolyuk's suspicious disappearance on Oct.10 raised some eyebrows on whether he went across the ocean for else than just being present near his wife, while she gave birth to their child. Few know whether Korky met (Shark's GM) Dian Lombardi during his short trip to North America. Assuming that the meeting took place, it's seems like the sides failed to work anything out.
As the Red Army Club owned by CSKA-Holding and Viktor Tikhonov's HC Moscow reunited a few weeks prior to the season, some players from the High League side found themselves jobless. Washington Capital's prospect Maxim Orlov was one of them. Unable to sign with any RSL or High League team and freed by Tikhonov's squad Orlov found himself playing in the garage league in Moscow. But as November's Transfer Period approaches Orlov has been invited for a try-out at SKA St-Petersburg. Heading along with Maxim are Buffalo Sabres' draftee Vasily Bizyaev, Alexei Krovopuskov, who led Russia U-20 side in scoring at the 1998 World Junior Tournament and former Edmonton Oiler, 35 year old, Alexander Kerch.
- Avangard Omsk defender Oleg Shargorodsky transfered to Kazan's Ak Bars.
- SKA Saint-Petersburg aquired RW Ilya Gorbushin from Avangard and signed D Artyom Ostroushko to a one-year contract.
- C Andrei Rassolko transfered from Metallurg Novokuznetsk to Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk.
- C Evgeny Lapin was released by CSKA Moscow and recently signed with Metallurg Novokuznetsk.
- Molot-Prikamie Perm signed 35-year old Czech puckstopper Oldrjik Svoboda from Znojmo (Extraligue).
