OCT.14 -- Nearing the end of the second period in Novokuznetsk last night Metallurg had a 5-0 lead over RSL's top team, Kazan's Ak Bars. Nikolai Soloviev's side had an outstanding second period scoring five goals on 16 shots, going 3 in 4 with man advantage. Visitors restored some respect via Denis Platonov's and Vladimir Tsyplakov's goals. But an upset that no one expected stood.
Denis Tyurin had a goal and two assists for Metallurg. Undersized and an average skater 22-years old undrafted Tyurin is extremely dangerous around the net due to a smart set of hands and knock for finding an opening in the slot. Another of Metallurg's print sized forwards 5"8 puckwiz Valery Khlebnikov scored his fifth tally of the season while celebrating his 21 birthday. Veterans Dmitry Nabokov, Sergei Moskalev and Vladimir Antipin also scored for the home side.
Note: Atlanta Thrashers Ruslan Zainullin played his first game of the season for Ak Bars after recovering from the injury. Projected power forward spend a few shifts on the ice in company with youngsters Albert Vishnyakov and Denis Zaripov.
In OMSK, Ivan Hlinka's Avangard ended two games loosing streak, while welcoming back captain Maxim Sushinsky who finally recovered from the head injury.
At Sokolniki Arena in Moscow, Veteran Andrei Kovalenko scored twice and set up Ivan Tkachenko for his 2nd goal of the season as Lokomotiv outgunned struggling Spartak 5-2. Loko's Anton But had an assists on Pavel Vorobiev's goal. Tampa Bay prospect leads RSL with 15 points, he had a t least a point in all but 1 out of 12 games he played in.
In Cherepovets, Atlanta Thrashers prospect Yuri Dobryshkin had career high 4 points night. Dobryshkin scored once and set up his linemates three times as Severstal hammered Amur 8-2.
